Chapter Nine
The morning meeting had just dispersed, and Norman was obviously keen to grab Slaterâs attention before he and Darling set off for the search site. As soon as Goodnews had left the room, he called Slater over.
âDo you have a minute?â
Slater made his way across the room to Normanâs desk. It was difficult to tell anything from the state of his friendâs clothes because, frankly, he always looked a mess, but this morning his face seemed to suggest he had been there all night.
âHave you been here all night?â
âI did a bit of digging into the Crumps after you left,â said Norman, ignoring Slaterâs question. âYou might be interested in what I found, although you might not necessarily be able to use it all.â
Darling had followed Slater over.
âYou make it sound like youâve been dabbling in the dark arts,â she said.
Norman looked embarrassed.
âJesus, Norm,â said Slater.
âIâve just been trying to help with this investigation. Maybe my methods can save us some time.â
âThatâs fair enough, but itâs not going to help us if we canât use it as evidence.â
Norman sighed and gave Slater a disapproving look.
âBackground information doesnât necessarily have to be used as evidence in court,â he said, âbut it can be very useful in helping to figure out what makes people tick.â
âWhat about procedure, Norm?â
âYou might be stuck in a box called procedure, but me? Iâm a civilian. That gives me license to step outside the box.â
âYou could jeopardise the whole case.â
âOkay, fine,â said Norman, huffily. âIâll just tear it all up and forget about it.â
âWhoa! Hang on a minute,â said Slater. âI didnât say I didnât want to read it.â
âWhat about your precious procedure? I wouldnât want to be guilty of leading you off the straight and narrow.â
âStop sulking and give it here,â said Slater, holding out his hand. âJust make sure Goodnews doesnât get to hear about it.â
Norman reluctantly handed over the notes.
Darling had been watching the exchange.
âListen to you two,â she said, with a broad smile on her face.
âWhat?â Norman and Slater spoke in unison.
âIâll just say, hashtag: old married couple,â she said, âand leave it at that.â
Norman looked suitably embarrassed, but Slater managed to remain expressionless.
âLetâs have a look,â said Darling.
âIâm not sure this information has been sourced in the correct manner,â said Slater. âAnd as senior officer, I have a responsibility to make sure you stick to proper procedure.â
Darling caught Normanâs eye. He winked at her.
âHashtag: power mad,â he said, quietly.
Darling laughed out loud.
âWhatâs that?â asked Slater.
âI said my writingâs bad,â said Norman innocently.
Slater didnât believe him for a minute.
âThose notes are printed,â he said.
âYeah,â agreed Norman, âbecause my writingâs so bad.â
Slater scowled at the pair of them. He knew he was the butt of the joke heâd missed, but he also knew heâd be wasting his time trying to find out why. He waved the notes at Norman.
âIs this going to be worth reading?â he asked.
âYeah, I think so,â said Norman. âThatâs why I decided to pursue it.â
âOh come on,â said Darling.
